Coarse Whetstones
Coarse whetstones are stones with a low grit size, usually in the range of #80–#400. These tools are designed for heavier work, such as repairing knives, removing excess steel, or quickly removing rust. They are very aggressive, which makes them easier to sharpen and prepare for further processing on medium and finishing stones.
Coarse stones can be used for several things:
- Rebuilding and flattening the cutting edge
- Removing chips, defects, and damage
- Removing and improving the knife's geometry
- Preparing the steel for the next sharpening stage
Advantages:
- It quickly removes rust and other stains from steel.
- It works well on knives that are thick or have been used a lot.
- It is very useful at the first step of sharpening.
Here's some helpful information:
Low-grit stones wear out faster and need to be flattened regularly, for example, with a diamond plate. They often produce a lot of "slurry," which speeds up the work. Diamond stones are also great for working with very hard or powdered steels.
Coarse whetstones are essential for any set of knives. Without them, it's hard to restore knives that are worn down and prepare them for the next steps in sharpening.
