Miyagoshi Turugi 400 – Artisan Sharpening Stone (#400)

Miyagoshi Seito (宮越製陶) is a small manufacturer from Kyoto that has been handcrafting sharpening stones for demanding users for several decades. Turugi 400 is a medium grit model designed for basic sharpening of knives and tools. It is made using a vitrification (glazing) process, which ensures exceptional durability, resistance to deformation, and consistent abrasion quality.

This process involves compressing a mixture of abrasive and binder under high pressure and then firing it for about 33 hours at a temperature of 1300°C. The result is a homogeneous structure with high dimensional stability that does not absorb excessive water and maintains a flat surface for a long time.

    Application of #400 grit

400 grit is a universal choice for the actual sharpening stage – between aggressive grinding and edge finishing. The Turugi 400 Stone is suitable for:

    • restoring sharpness to dull blades,
    • correcting cutting edges,
    • preparing surfaces for further smoothing (e.g., with #1000 or #3000).

It is especially recommended for kitchen knives, carpentry tools, and general workshop applications.

    Characteristic features:

    • handmade in a small workshop in Kyoto – a guarantee of precision and quality control,
    • made using vitrification (glazing) technology – durability and resistance to deformation,
    • microporous structure – absorbs water well and provides adequate slip,
    • stable, even surface – minimal need for flattening,
    • aesthetic appearance – light, yellowish-white marbled surface.
