Hard, wear-resistant powder steels may need more time or a faster-cutting stone. A coarse stone should be reserved for repair and major reprofiling.

Normal sharpening should remain on the edge bevel. Unnecessary abrasion across the patterned blade face can scratch the finish or reduce the contrast created by etching. Restoring a full Damascus finish is different from sharpening and may require specialist polishing and re-etching, so it should not be attempted as routine maintenance.
