Japanese Natural Whetstones (Jnat)

Japanese natural stones (Jnat) are the most traditional and unique group of sharpening stones. They are formed over millions of years through natural geological processes that create layers of rock rich in silica, minerals, and microquartz. Each stone is different. They have different levels of hardness, textures, colors, and personalities.

What makes Jnat stand out?
They provide a very subtle and natural finish to the blade.
They allow you to achieve the traditional kasumi effect, which is a style of sharpening that is valued in Japanese kitchen knives.
Their uneven grain gives you a special "feeling" and control when you're sharpening.
Each stone is different.

What are they used for?
Natural stones are best used for the final steps of sharpening. These steps include polishing the edge, bringing out the contrast between the hagane (core) and the jigane (cladding), and giving the steel its natural smoothness.

Who are Janet Stones for?
Natural Japanese stones are often chosen by enthusiasts, collectors, and professional sword polishers (togi-shi) because of their specific characteristics and price. Chefs and enthusiasts like them because they can make knives look unique, which you can't do with synthetic stones.
Japanese natural whetstones are more than just tools. They are part of a centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship tradition. This tradition makes every sharpening process a unique experience.
