The small yet convenient Masashi SLD Black Utility Knife, with a 150 mm blade, is particularly useful for processing smaller items. It works great with garlic, shallots, or mushrooms.
These knives are handmade by Masashi-san from start to finish. The craftsman forges the steel himself, grinds, and sharpens the knives. He also attaches the handles by hand.
Forged using the SAN-MAI technique, the Masashi SLD series knives have a 3-layer blade. They have a hard core forged from SLD steel. The outer layers are made of soft stainless steel, and their task is to protect the core. These knives achieve an extremely high hardness of 60-62 HRC during the heat treatment process. The Kurouchi blade finish is made of unprocessed black steel, which gives the knives a unique, typically Japanese look. The octagonal, traditional Japanese “WA” style handle is made of light magnolia wood. It is comfortable to use for both right-handed and left-handed people.
